NFIRS Annual Public Data Release
Free annual full-file release of publicly reported U.S. fire incidents, distributed as zipped relational CSV tables with NFIRS coding documentation.
Questions this answers
4 · best fit firstOpenFEMA provides standing annual All Incidents PDR files and identifies the GeoPackage offerings as geocoded versions. The PDR layout identifies each incident by STATE, FDID, INC_DATE, INC_NO, and EXP_NO and supplies incident date and time, incident type, Census tract, full incident-address components, and wildland latitude and longitude. A buyer can therefore search unrelated-target annual files for independently reported fires by location and time, subject to annual lag and voluntary, incomplete reporting.
The public PDR Fire Incident table supplies Area of Origin, Heat Source, Item First Ignited, Confined to Origin, Type of Material, Cause of Ignition, two ignition-factor fields, eight human-factor fields, and fire spread. These records share the incident key with dated Basic Incident and Incident Address records, allowing the coded circumstances to resolve to the documented fire event. They are reported coded facts, not an expert causal opinion or legal finding; preserve the coding dictionary and version and distinguish missing or unknown codes from negative findings.
The annual PDR Incident Address table supplies number or milepost, street prefix, name, type and suffix, apartment number, city, state, ZIP5 and ZIP4, and cross street, all keyed to the dated incident and its incident-type classification. OpenFEMA also distributes geocoded All Incidents versions. The Source can therefore identify independently reported fire incidents matched to a buyer-specified building street address while exposing address-match grain and annual vintage. Absence is not proof that no fire occurred, and incident chronology does not establish current damage, repair status, causation, or fraud.
The standing annual full files provide reporting geography and geocoded records plus incident type, property use, origin, heat source, first item ignited, ignition cause and factors, human factors, fire spread, and reported casualty fields. Those documented dimensions support descriptive pattern analysis among reported structure-fire incidents by defined area, occupancy cohort, period, and PDR vintage. Participation, incident reporting, and field completeness vary, and NFIRS supplies no exposure denominator, so outputs must not be described as complete incidence, total population counts, or exposure-normalized rates.
